High Impact Online Instruction

The Opportunity

Over the summer, children in low-income neighborhoods lose more than two months of their knowledge when they are not engaged in any learning. Summer 2020 was even more challenging given the disruptions in learning that started in March. McKinsey & Company conducted a study on the impact of COVID19 on learning, indicating that black and Hispanic students were at risk of experiencing learning losses equivalent to 10 months.

Our Approach

To mitigate the summer learning loss, PRACTICE partnered with the Charles and Lynn Schusterman Family Foundation and The Heckscher Foundation for Children and created a free, virtual, summer academic program for 10,138 NYC public school students completing Grades 3 – 8. Our team designed an engaging online summer experience to help students combat the feeling of isolation and build on their knowledge in math and reading while having fun. The 18-day, 6-week summer program consisted of 1.5 hours of live instruction with a PRACTICE Education Champion and one hour of independent learning work 3x per week (capping screen time to 7.5 hours per week).

Our Impact

By the end of the summer, students improved their reading ability by an average of 30 lexile levels, they read over 1,000,000 pages of grade appropriate texts, and spent an estimated 2,000,000 minutes on Khan Academy to improve their math skills.

“This one day I was thinking how hard it is for me to talk to people but the people in my class made it really easy for me and I truly appreciate that. Also, my teacher really took her time to make us understand even if it took the whole class period. PRACTICE is truly the best summer program that I could ever go to.”
