Excelling in Algebra I Regents Outcomes

The Opportunity

J.H.S. 216 George J. Ryan faced a challenge: ensuring that 60 seventh-grade scholars were adequately prepared to excel in the Algebra I Regents exam. The school recognized the need for specialized academic support to bridge knowledge gaps and familiarize students with the exam’s structure. With the high-stakes nature of the Regents exam, Assistant Principal Patrick Roberts sought a targeted tutoring solution to provide students with a robust academic foundation and critical problem-solving skills.

Our Approach

PRACTICE Tutoring collaborated closely with J.H.S. 216 to deliver a highly structured, in-person tutoring program tailored to the needs of the students. Key elements of the program included:

  • Dedicated Staffing: Two in-person tutors hired by Asst. Principal Roberts.
  • Daily Sessions: Tutoring sessions ran Monday through Thursday, from 8:30 AM to 3:30 PM, offering consistent, structured instruction.
  • Targeted Instruction: Tutors focused on Algebra I and Geometry, ensuring students were well-prepared for all relevant concepts.
  • Pre-Assessments: Baseline assessments were conducted to identify student strengths and areas for improvement, ensuring instruction was personalized and goal-oriented.
  • Instructional Strategies: Small group instruction, scaffolding, and differentiated learning techniques were emphasized. Tutors guided students through critical thinking exercises, encouraging them to brainstorm solutions rather than rely on direct answers.
  • Regents Exam Preparation: One session each week was dedicated to reviewing past Regents exams, familiarizing students with question design and testing format to reduce anxiety and improve test-taking skills.

Our Impact

The results of the program were outstanding:

  • 100% Pass Rate: All 60 students successfully passed the Algebra I Regents exam.
  • High Achievement: The lowest score in the cohort was an 80, demonstrating strong mastery of the material among all students.

These results underscore the effectiveness of personalized, structured tutoring in improving student outcomes, especially for high-stakes exams.
